What is real
when my entire perception has been covered by false hopes, lies,
misconceptions, and failure? What’s real is that when you hit senior year
of college; you hit the wall of reality. No more parents paying for everything,
no more teachers holding your hands, no more easy work-study jobs. When you are
in your last year of college your world view is now blurry because although you
took millions of classes that you believe would help you understand the world
better, they didn't prepare for paying bills, buying a house, marriage,
children, divorce, death, unemployment or fail adult struggles. What ever your
major you learned how to read, write, analyze, prepare presentations and
discuss a topic but there were no classes offering students the logical skills
we will need, once we pass the threshold of commencement. Its an incredibly
exciting day, all your friends, family, and loved ones come to the graduation
to cheer for you, and congratulate you and during that moment we all experience
a sort of adrenaline rush because after the degree is given and the tassel is
moved from one side to the other life becomes real
There are
seniors who absolutely know what they are doing after graduation, have plans
and ready for the adult life. Then there are other who are 'Clueless' because
they don't have a fancy job in their major or they don't have the skills to
make good money. What do they do then?
Well in my
opinion i believe while in college students need to see the importance of
networking, interning, and volunteering outside of the walls of the institution
in order to stand up to the wall of reality that will hit them preceding
graduation.
Its nothing
worse than being unsure, undecided, and clueless in a world of successful
people who strive for what they wanted and stopped at nothing to assure it
happened.
Its not
entirely easy to know everything at age 21-22 but it would be nice to know
simple things about managing finances, to loan repayment, housing, how to get a
job and so much more.
We are away from
our parents and the expectation is that every college student will be prepared
for the real world when school is over, but that is a failed expectation
because it never happens.
Never
is a big word, but I mean none of us are prepared for the snakes, bulldogs, and
Corella Deville's of the world. We can barely deal with our professors.
Out
of 10 things we should have together, the average college student will leave
with about half of them. It may sound sad to some but its our reality. We are
anxious, scared, and lost because the world out there is bigger than us and
bigger than what we read or did for homework assignments and projects but we have
to face the world with a blind eye and give it all we got or else college was a
waste.
I
know what’s real; what’s real is my name and my degree but the rest I still
need to find out.
